Dripping Springs, Texas — Gateway to the Hill Country

Dripping Springs was settled in the 1850s and named for the spring-fed limestone ledges nearby. Since 2010 it has become the center of Central Texas craft spirits, farmhouse brewing, and destination weddings, and in 2014 it became the first International Dark Sky Community in Texas.

Dripping Springs is the eastern gateway to the Hill Country, 25 miles west of Austin. It's known for craft distilleries and farmhouse breweries, the first International Dark Sky Community in Texas, and a destination-wedding industry that calls it the “Wedding Capital of Texas.” The swimming holes at Hamilton Pool and Reimers Ranch and the Driftwood wineries round it out.
Yes. In 2014 it became the first International Dark Sky Community in Texas, sixth in the world at the time. The city enforces lighting ordinances — shielded, downward-facing fixtures — to protect the night sky. Get away from the town center and the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on a clear night.
It's a nickname the area adopted and trademarked, backed by more than 35 wedding venues within 15 miles of town. Wedding season runs March through November and drives much of the weekend traffic and lodging demand.
Hamilton Pool is reservation-only through Travis County — two time slots a day, and it books out weeks ahead in summer. You cannot walk up. Reserve online before you drive out. Reimers Ranch nearby offers river swimming without a reservation.
Most cluster along Fitzhugh Road — Jester King, Treaty Oak, 12 Fox, Family Business — plus Dripping Springs Distilling and Twisted X in town. It's a two-lane road with no sidewalk between stops, so pick a driver. Some tasting rooms are walk-in, others appointment-only; call ahead on weekends.
Driftwood is seven miles south — 106 residents, no downtown, and one of the most-visited barbecue spots in Texas. Salt Lick BBQ (all-you-can-eat, BYOB, cash only) anchors it, alongside Duchman Family and Driftwood Estate wineries and Vista Brewing.
Backroads Hill Country represents vacation rentals across the Hill Country and is expanding into the Dripping Springs corridor. The area leans toward rental homes and wedding-venue lodging over chain hotels.
Spring (March–May) for wildflowers and mild weather, and fall (October–November) for comfortable outdoor drinking weather. Summer is hot but the swimming holes make up for it. Wedding season (March–November) means weekends are busy — book tables and reservations ahead.
About 25 miles, 40–60 minutes via US-290. Friday afternoons back up west of Oak Hill, so allow extra time heading out for a weekend.
